Black Friday Bonanza

Black Friday Bonanza – Is online shopping effecting the job market?

Black Friday has finally arrived! It is the start of the holiday shopping season, the day that everyone patiently awaits for where you can grab an item at a spectacular price compared to the RRP.

Everyone has their preferred retailers where they hope to grab some good bargains, but do you prefer to shop online or in store for your deals?

According to The Office for National Statistics, one in every five pounds spent in every UK shop is now online, compared to 2013 when this figure was one in ten pounds. New data shows online sales rose by 15.3% over the past year and now make up a record high of 18.2% of all retail sales. Shoppers seem to be avoiding the hustle and bustle of shopping in store, dodging mile long queues and sifting through items in a panic to find the best deal. Instead, they can take a more relaxed approach, sitting in the comfort of their own home using their computer or phone to browse through the offers. Using a phone in particular can save a huge amount of time as shopping can be done on the go while continuing busy day to day life. Experts have said they saw online sales rise by over a third (35%) in the year to July 2018.

Although online shopping is convenient for most of us, it has hugely impacted the retail industry, reducing retail employment in the last year by 62,000, with the headcount in shops and other outlets falling by 2.2pc last year as referred to by The Office for National Statistics. In light of this, even though the retail sector has had a huge hit in the past few years, almost 2.9 million people are still employed in the retail sector making it one of the largest sources of jobs in the UK. This also means that recruitment across other job sectors are increasing, for example due to more people ordering online, the size of  warehouse and distribution centres have massively increased, creating more warehouse and stores person type roles. The hours of work available have also changed, for example, businesses are now moving away from the standard 9am – 5pm, opting for shift work to cater for the growing demand for 24 hour connectivity and quick delivery processing times, catering for shoppers that cannot make it to stores due to conflict between work and opening hours.

Overall, no matter which way you shop this Black Friday, despite the job market changing, there are still roles available, and we can discuss with you how to make your skills transferrable such that you can adapt to new positions in such a dynamic business sector.

Happy Shopping!
